2022-12-04 6 Desert Star
(Connelly, Michael - 2022)
Crime/Mystery Suggested By: Author.
For years, Harry Bosch has been working a case that haunts him--the murder of an entire family by a psychopath who still walks free. Ballard makes Bosch an offer: come volunteer as an investigator in her new Open-Unsolved Unit, and he can pursue his "white whale" with the resources of the LAPD behind him. First priority for Ballard is to clear the unsolved rape and murder of a sixteen-year-old girl. The decades-old case is essential to the councilman who supported re-forming the unit, and who could shutter it again--the victim was his sister. When Ballard gets a "cold hit" connecting the killing to a similar crime, proving that a serial predator has been at work in the city for years, the political pressure has never been higher. To keep momentum going, she has to pull Bosch off his own investigation, the case that is the consummation of his lifelong mission.

Free Kindle book. I got this in hopes of fulfilling an Amazon reading challenge (I don't think that it counted - I ended up reading a Jenny Lawson essay instead). 2022-11-05 7 I Choose Darkness
(Lawson, Jenny - 2022)
Essays Suggested By: Amazon.com.
Kindle Prime book. I found this in a list of Great on Kindle books as part of a challenge for the Kindle reading program winter of 2022. This essay takes Jenny back to where it all started, from her humble beginnings as a trick-or-treater in the 1980s, on high alert for (logistically improbable) candy laced with razor blades and the (allegedly) ever-present threat of satanists on the loose. From there, she has risen from the candy-wrapper ashes of her childhood to claim her rightful lifestyle as the queen of Halloween.

From the author of The Odds of Loving Grover Cleveland comes a hilarious and heartbreaking novel about coming apart, getting it together--and moving on. It's just a two-hour drive. Pondering math problems is Esther Ainsworth's obsession. If only life's puzzles required logic. Her stepfather's solution? Avoidance. He's exiled the family to Truth or Consequences, New Mexico, to erase a big secret from Esther's past. So much for the truth. Now for the consequences: an empty swimming pool, a water-sucking cactus outside her window, a goldfish rescued from a church festival, and Esther's thirst for something real.

The sculptor replaces the original with one of his fakes, and ships the real one to New York City for an under-the-table sale to a museum. The statues travel to America spread out among five crates, labeled to ensure that delivery goes as planned. But it doesn't work. Asked to pick up the crate marked "E" at the airport, delivery man Jerry Manelli, confused by his client's Spanish accent, takes crate "A" instead. The statue disappears into the city, leading him on a baffling chase, which--if he comes up with the wrong Aztec--could cost him his life.

2022-06-04 6 The Mirror and the Mask
(Hart, Ellen - 2009)
Crime/Mystery Suggested By: Author.
Jane Lawless series Book 17. Minneapolis restaurateur Jane Lawless is at crossroads. The rough economy has put her plans for a third restaurant on hold, and her long distance romance is on the rocks and quite possibly unsalvageable. A girl, down on her luck, turns up at the restaurant looking for some temporary work. Jane is attracted to her, and after some questioning, finds out that the girl is in town trying to find her long-lost stepfather. Jane volunteers to help. All she had to do is find Annie Archer's stepfather. Jane tracks down a likely match--a man who has made a small fortune in real estate. The clues in this seemingly simple case point to more threatening family secrets than where Annie's father has been hiding out. WEIRD THING: every description I could find for this book says that Jane is adrift in tough financial times and takes this case from Nolan, her ex-cop private guy friend. That did NOT happen. I wonder why the interwebs think that?

2022-05-16 3 How to Talk Dirty and Influence People: An Autobiography
(Bruce, Lenny - 1965)
Auto/Biography Suggested By: Author.
During the course of a career that began in the late 1940s, Lenny Bruce challenged the sanctity of organized religion and other societal and political conventions; he widened the boundaries of free speech. Critic Ralph Gleason said, "So many taboos have been lifted and so many comics have rushed through the doors Lenny opened. He utterly changed the world of comedy." Although Bruce died when he was only forty, his influence on the worlds of comedy, jazz, and satire are incalculable. How to Talk Dirty and Influence People remains a brilliant existential account of his life and the forces that made him the most important and controversial entertainer in history.

2022-03-09 6 The Secret to Superhuman Strength
    (Bechdel, Alison - 2021)
    Graphic Novel Suggested By: Author.
Comics and cultural superstar Alison Bechdel delivers a deeply layered story of her fascination, from childhood to adulthood, with every fitness craze to come down the pike: from Jack LaLanne in the 60s ("Outlandish jumpsuit! Cantaloupe-sized guns!") to the existential oddness of present-day spin class. Readers will see their athletic or semi-active pasts flash before their eyes through an ever-evolving panoply of running shoes, bicycles, skis, and sundry other gear. But the more Bechdel tries to improve herself, the more her self appears to be the thing in her way. She turns for enlightenment to Eastern philosophers and literary figures, including Beat writer Jack Kerouac, whose search for self-transcendence in the great outdoors appears in moving conversation with the author's own. This gifted artist and not-getting-any-younger exerciser comes to a soulful conclusion. The secret to superhuman strength lies not in six-pack abs, but in something much less clearly defined: facing her own non-transcendent but all-important interdependence with others.

    2022-03-02 6 Elric of Melniboné
    (Moorcock, Michael - 1972)
    Fantasy Suggested By: Author.
$0.00 Kindle book. I actually read this out of the collection, Elric of Melniboné: The Elric Saga Part 1 which includes four books, of which is this is the first. The youthful Elric is a cynical and melancholy king, heir to a nation whose 100,000-year rule of the world ended less than 500 years hence. More interested in brooding contemplation than holding the throne, Elric is a reluctant ruler, but he also realizes that no other worthy successor exists and the survival of his once-powerful, decadent nation depends on him alone. Elric's nefarious, brutish cousin Yrkoon has no patience for his physically weak kinsman, and he plots constantly to seize Elric's throne, usually over his dead body. Elric of Melniboné follows Yrkoon's scheming, reaching its climax in a battle between Elric and Yrkoon with the demonic runeblades Stormbringer and Mournblade. In this battle, Elric gains control of the soul-stealing Stormbringer, an event that proves pivotal to the Elric saga.

    Memoir Suggested By: Other.
Imagine if David Sedaris could draw. This book was a suggested read by one of the Washington Post advice columnists as a good source to understand what it feels like to be depressed. The question to the advice columnist was pretty much "I have a depressed friend who makes plans to do stuff with, and then bails without telling me. Do I still have to be her friend?" The columnist said, "yes, should stay friends." Really? how much does it have to hurt before you're allowed to leave them to it and get on with your own life? She did have some helpful suggestions like, "when you plan to do things with this person, always have a backup plan so your day isn't wasted when she stands you up again." My friend, K, suggested that you invite a third person, so that the two of you who do show up can do something when the other gal stands you up.

    (Pan, Jessica - 2019)
    Memoir Suggested By: BookBub.com.
What would happen if a shy introvert lived like a gregarious extrovert for one year? If she knowingly and willingly put herself in perilous social situations that she'd normally avoid at all costs? Writer Jessica Pan intends to find out. With the help of various extrovert mentors, Jessica sets up a series of personal challenges (talk to strangers, perform stand-up comedy, host a dinner party, travel alone, make friends on the road, and much, much worse) to explore whether living like an extrovert can teach her lessons that might improve the quality of her life. Chronicling the author's hilarious and painful year of misadventures, this book explores what happens when one introvert fights her natural tendencies, takes the plunge, and tries (and sometimes fails) to be a little bit braver.

While he thinks he is completely alone in the apartment building (it is Christmas after all), it turns out there is someone else there: Haley.
    4. POLARIS IS WHERE YOU'LL FIND ME BY JENNY HAN: Natalie is abandoned by her mother in South Korea on Christmas Eve. The person who finds her is Santa and he decides to adopt Natalie and bring her with him to the North Pole. Here she grows up amongst elves and even developed a crush on Flynn: the hottest elf her age.

    9. BEER BUCKETS AND BABY JESUS BY MYRA MCENTIRE: Vaughn is the Fred/George from the world Myra McEntire created. He loves trouble and pulling pranks on people - pranks that sometimes go too far. For example, he accidentally put the barn next to the church on fire and now the church has nowhere to perform their Nativity play. The judge says that Vaughn can walk free - if he helps the local pastor with the Christmas play. Luckily for him, the pastor has a great looking daughter who is not like she seems at first sight...
    10. WELCOME TO CHRISTMAS, CA BY KIERSTEN WHITE: Maria is living in Christmas, CA - a town where everything is always christmassy (and town is an overstatement, it is a tiny tiny place). She can't wait to leave the place behind - like all teenagers. Until she meets Ben, the new chef at the diner of her mum's boyfriend. He loves Christmas and he actually manages to give Christmas cheers to everyone in the town. But Maria is a different story...
